BEST PRODUCTS FOR ACNE-PRONE SKIN

Acne is the most common chronic skin condition and appears in many forms. From whiteheads to blackheads to sore and inflamed breakouts, the Beautology shop has a variety of treatments to treat and prevent the entire acne cycle.

Our acne treatments can target any form of acne, from facial acne to body acne as well as acne scars and pigmentation for both teenage and adult acne.

What causes acne? 

Facial acne, back acne and chest acne are caused by a variety of factors, most notably: hormones, genetics, and stress. It occurs when overactive oil glands produce an excess of oil that combines with skin cells to plug pores. Plugged pores, in turn, cause bacteria to multiply, leading to skin breakouts and cystic acne.

Sun exposure can exacerbate the condition. It dries the skin, which may initially clear up acne, but also stimulates the sebaceous glands to produce more oil. This causes acne to reoccur, and more severely than before.

What can aggravate acne?

• MANY MOISTURISERS : Most moisturisers contain large-molecular size oils or similar occlusive agents that can block pores and cause acne.  The skin of acne sufferers already contains enough oil, so a moisturiser is rarely necessary. If you believe that you do need a moisturiser, our doctor will recommend one at your initial consultation that won’t block the pores.
• OIL-BASED COSMETICS such as oily foundations, many moisturisers, powder compacts, oily cleansers etc.
• SUNSCREAM CREAMS: When choosing SPF products opt for an oil-free or gel formulation .
• SOME ORAL CONTRACEPTIVES AND INJECTABLE CONTRACEPTIVES
• SQUEEZING: Do not pick or squeeze. Squeezing spreads the inflammation deeper into the skin, which can then lead to scarring.
• STRESS AND POOR SLEEP PATTERNS:  These probably act via hormone release.
• POOR AND UNBALANCED DIETS

The mistakes people make in treating their acne

MISTAKE NO. 1:  NOT PERSISTING WITH AN ACNE TREATMENT LONG ENOUGH: You must give a product at least 8 weeks and then keep using it if you notice an improvement.  In some cases, your skin might feel a bit irritated in the first couple of weeks of treatment or even look a little worse before it gets better.

MISTAKE NO. 2:  OVER-SCRUBBING OR OVER-CLEANSING THE SKIN:
Scrubbing the skin will actually worsen acne because it can compromise the skin’s protective barrier and increase irritation.

Remember: Acne is not caused by unclean skin, so over-scrubbing or over-cleansing will not help and may even irritate the skin.

MISTAKE NO. 4: USING THE WRONG PRODUCTS ON ACNE-PRONE SKIN:
Certain ingredients found in products such as cosmetics (oil-based foundations & powder compacts), most moisturisers and some sunscreens can clog pores and aggravate acne or even be the sole cause of it.
