What does SPF mean?
SPF measures the amount of protection a suncream can provide you against the sun's UVB rays.
It is rated on a scale from two to 50+. The higher the SPF number, the stronger the protection you'll have.
SPF indicates how long it will take for your skin to turn red compared to not wearing any protection.
So if you normally start to burn within 30 minutes without sun protection, then a SPF 30 suncream theoretically provides you with 30 times more protection, in other words 15 hours of protection.
Unfortunately as suncream dries, gets rubbed off and comes off in water, you should not go 15 hours without reapplying suncream. The Skin Cancer Foundation believes that sun cream only stays effective for two hours and then should be reapplied.
What’s the best suncream and SPF sun protection for my skin?
Everyone has different requirements with regards to sun protection (skin type; face or body; length of time in direct sunlight; office UV rays; water resistant; to be used with make-up), so it’s important to do a little bit of research and make an informed decision.
But as a general rule see the box below to get a rough idea of what SPF sun protection you should be looking for. Keep reading however to find out the adding information you should take into account before you make a decision.
