Keratosis Pilaris
A very common skin condition that usually affects the upper arms, thighs, cheeks and buttocks. It usually causes rough patches, tiny bumps and redness. The bumps are usually not painful or itchy but worsen when the seasons change.
It is a very harmless skin condition. Unfortunately it cannot be prevented or cured but can be treated with moisturizers and creams to help the appearance of the skin texture. It most commonly starts at a young child age and people usually grow out of it by the time they are in their 30s.
What causes Keratosis Pilaris
Your skin contains a protein called Keratin. This protein protects your skin from harmful substances and fights off infections. Keratosis Pilaris happens when there is a build of the keratin protein.
This causes the hair follicles on your body to be blocked up, which causes the rough bumpy skin to occur. The only known reason as to why this may happen to some people and not others is based on your genetics. Other possible causes could be atopic dermatitis and dryness.
Tip to help your Keratosis Pilaris
- One the best things you can do is to not pick at it. You could scar your skin by picking at it and when it finally clears up you will be left with the marks of the scars.
- Moisturizing often to avoid dryness is key as dry skin can make this condition worse.
- Do not use harsh exfoliants or loofahs on it, you want to gently exfoliate so you do not irritate the skin.
- Avoid really hot showers or baths for long periods of time as this can cause the oil to strip from your skin creating dryness.
- Tight clothing can cause friction against the skin, this should be avoided as best as possible.
