This is a biological process that every woman has to go through. Menopause usually started between the ages 45 - 55 and can last between 7 and 14 years.

Your hormones start to change causing your body to go through major changes. Some side effects are your monthly cycle slowing and stopping, hot flushes, your bones become less dense, unable to sleep, mood changes, body changes and of course changes in your skin.

Whenever your hormones are changing you can almost guarantee it is going to have an impact on your skin.

What menopause does to your skin

During menopause our oestrogen levels strongly decrease which can cause women to lose up to 30% of the collagen in their skin making the skin age drastically. Ultimately resulting in fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging. A decreased oestrogen level can always cause your sebum (oil) production to slow resulting in a dryer, thinner looking skin.

Tips to help with your skin during menopause

  • Start taking collagen supplements before menopause starts. Late 20s is the recommended starting age for your collagen supplements.
  • During menopause you want to use stronger products to help fight the signs of ageing and speed up what your hormones are trying to slow down. Retinol is a form of Vitamin A and is a strong ingredient to help with the signs of again. You also want to use moisturizers with hyaluronic acid (which is your body's natural form of hydration) to help keep your skin hydrated and plump.
  • Always wear SPF every single day. The sun is a huge factor in aging our skin. The UVs from the sun damage our skin and break down our elastin fibers causing our skin to sag and stretch.
  • It is proven that living an active lifestyle can help with the side effects of menopause, as well as having a healthy well balanced diet.
