Pores are the opening to your hair follicles all over your body. It contains the sebaceous gland (oil glands). The pores on your face are usually more noticeable when they are enlarged.

Enlarged pores can happen to anyone at any age but it tends to be more common as you get older and lose elasticity in your skin. 

What causes enlarged pores

Genetics and age play a big factor in your enlarged pores. If your parents have large pores it is most likely you will be prone to them as well. As we age we lose the elasticity in our skin making our pores appear larger.

Sun damage can also be a reason for your pores being enlarged. Overexposure to the sun can cause your skin to thicken as well as break down your collagen causing your pores to appear larger.

Another big factor is clogged pores. If your pores are full of blackheads and commedones then they will naturally enlarge if you are doing nothing to get rid of them. 

Tips to helps reduce your enlarged pores

• Cleanse and exfoliate your skin regularly to make sure your pores are clean so they do not expand. 
• Try using clay masks. These masks draw out water and oil from your pores to help tighten up the skin.
• Going for regular facial treatments such as a chemical peel will help keep the skin tightened. 
• Wear SPF and moisturize everyday, protecting your skin and keeping it moisturized will help your skin from getting damaged and losing elasticity. 
• Try not to touch your face too often, the oil from your hands can go into the skin and make your pores expand.
• Do not sleep in makeup, always wash your face before you go to sleep. 
• Have a healthy active lifestyle. Eating a balanced diet and exercising often has been proven to reduce sebum (oil) production, which will help when you are trying to shrink your pores.
